The small stained chrysalis and the other small chrysalis with red stitching are both ‘Specimens’, the big chrysalis with the beaded mattress is ‘Self Portrait (Adult)’, the beading in the embroidery hoop is ‘Seeping’. The beading on the red are detail shots of the Self Portrait. These ideas culminated in The Human Chrysalis Project, with some of these pieces including beadwork to evoke blood and fluid. This detailing – the simulated moisture connoting something living and growing – is also a visual representation of the behaviour and emotionality of queerness: it must be expressed one way or another.
